I Got Mine!

Ok, it's the second printing...I'm late to the party.

But better late than never!

Can you say 'inspiration'?

Lots of cool ideas; I've only skimmed through it, but I've already seen a couple of things that I'd never noticed on the PR website.

Now if I can just squeeze in some time to sew...

  1. Ohhhh let me know how you like the book.

I wanted to ask you if you ever do a muslin of the things you sew before you actually cut and sew the intended fabric? Some of the sewing blogs I follow always do this and I see the importance of why, for fitting and what not, but do you do it? Is it worth the time and effort in sewing the garment twice? You're such a sewing goddess I figure you'd be the one to ask. :)

  2. I do sometimes. If the pattern company is new to me and I don't know how the fit runs, or if the pattern is complicated and fitted, or if I'm going to use fabric that is dear to me, I'll make a muslin.

It really doesn't take long to make a muslin; there's no finishing, no interfacing...lots of the things that take time on a finished garment are skipped on a muslin.

But, sometimes I'll just use some cheap or near-miss fabric as a first garment from the pattern(um, the black and white stripe I'm using on the current shirt is a near-miss; ordered it online only to discover that the stripe is printed on, not woven in, so...meh...). That way, if it turns out nice, I can wear it; if not, I can finish it up and donate it or trash it if it's too bad without remorse.

It pretty much just depends on how confident I am in the fitting.

Muslins *have* been very helpful (The Flute Player's Quest Force Awards dress comes to mind)...and they have been busy work(I have one jacket that I really worked to get the muslin *just so*...then I hit a hormonal upheaval and gained weight and outgrew the muslin before I ever made it up; now I've got to Start Over Again on it..*roll eyes*...)

Usually I use fabric from the Wal-Mart cheap table, but I did recently purchase some REAL muslin to use to mock up a couple of things on which the Fit Matters...I hope to get to work on that soon...

  3. Tell me how you like it. I haven't noticed it yet in bookstores near me.

  4. I ordered mine from PR. There are cheaper sources, but I wanted a signed one. ;-).

I don't know when I'll have time to sit down and really read it...sigh...
